Lymphedema Centers and Therapists The protocol recommended
by the Circle of Hope Lymphedema Foundation Inc. (COHLF) for managing
lymphedema consists of Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD), Complex Decongestive
Physiotherapy (CDP -- also referred to as CDT), education on the signs/symptoms
of infection, proper skin care to avoid risk of infection and remedial
exercise for the affected extremity. The exercises prescribed help to
activate the muscle pump which assists in reducing the buildup of fluid
in the limb. The manual lymph drainage is a series of specific strokes
to activate the production of lymph, redirecting the lymph fluid toward
healthier lymph vessels, thereby reducing the swelling in the limb. The
CDP is the application of compression bandaging following MLD to prevent
the reaccumulation of fluid. During the course of therapy the certified
therapist will instruct you on doing the MLD on your own -- (it's not
hard to do -- you can do it while in bed or watching t.v.!!) -- as well
as choosing the appropriate compression garment to control the swelling.
