The protocol recommended by the Circle of Hope Lymphedema Foundation Inc. (COHLF) for managing lymphedema consists of Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD), Complex Decongestive Physiotherapy (CDP -- also referred to as CDT), education on the signs/symptoms of infection, proper skin care to avoid risk of infection and remedial exercise for the affected extremity. The exercises prescribed help to activate the muscle pump which assists in reducing the buildup of fluid in the limb. The manual lymph drainage is a series of specific strokes to activate the production of lymph, redirecting the lymph fluid toward healthier lymph vessels, thereby reducing the swelling in the limb. The CDP is the application of compression bandaging following MLD to prevent the reaccumulation of fluid. During the course of therapy the certified therapist will instruct you on doing the MLD on your own -- (it's not hard to do -- you can do it while in bed or watching t.v.!!) -- as well as choosing the appropriate compression garment to control the swelling.

Lymphedema is a disease that requires ongoing management which is why it is crucial that lymphedema patients be treated by a certified therapist. Ask the therapist what their treatment consists of and be sure you are receiving the complete protocol. You will need a prescription from a medical doctor to seek treatment for lymphedema.

You can locate a certified lymphedema therapist at one of the following websites:

  1. The National Lymphedema Network (NLN)
  2. Klose Training and Consulting
  3. Lymphology Association of North America

The COHLF website also has a lot of information for patients, including a list of questions you should ask when choosing a therapist.

The NLN and LANA have issued guidelines for qualifications as a certified lymphedema therapist. Know what the therapists training and credentials are. Read about it here: www.lymphnet.org/resourceGuide/resourceGuide.htm You can also search for more information on the NLN website at: www.lymphnet.org
